FORT MEAGHER
Rams Head Crosshaven

After British occupation of the 26 counties ended in 1921 the harbour forts at Cork Harbour, Berehaven and Lough Swilly remained in the possession of the British crown forces. They were handed over to the Irish army on 11 July 1938 when the Union Jack was finally lowered to be replaced by the national flag of Ireland, the tricolour. Fort Camden (named in honour of the notorious Lord Camden, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland) was renamed Dún Úi Mheachair or Fort Meagher in honour of Thomas Francis Meagher, one of the Young Ireland leaders in the Rebellion of 1848. After being convicted of sedition, he was first sentenced to death, but received transportation for life to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) in Australia. - (Thomas Francis Meagher born in Waterford 23.08.1823, died 01.07.1867 near Fort Benton, Montana, USA)
