HANDOVER OF FORT MEAGHER
& CORK HARBOUR BY THE BRITISH - 1938

Following the establishment of Saorstát Éireann, three deep water Treaty Ports at Berehaven, Spike Island and Lough Swilly were retained by the British Crown Forces in accordance with the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 6 December 1921. The main reason for the retention of the ports was the U-boat Campaign around Irish coasts during World War I and the concern of the British that it might recur.

As part of the settlement of the Anglo-Irish Trade War in the 1930s, the ports were transferred to Ireland in 1938.
• Spike Island & Harbour Forts handover 11 July 1938
• Berehaven handover 29 September 1938
• Lough Swilly handover 03 October 1938

When Ireland regained possession of Fort Camden on Rams Head in Crosshaven the name was changed to Dún Úi Mheachair / Fort Meagher in memory of the Young Ireland Leader Thomas Francis Meagher. Dún Úi Mheachair / Fort Meagher is still it's correct name.
